Union Rags-A Derby Kind of Love Story
Well, I’m not finished with Kentucky yet! We only have one day left until the 138th (!) running of the Kentucky Derby and this year I will be rooting for Union Rags, a home town favorite. Union Rags is from Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania and is owned by Phyliss Wyeth Take a moment (ok 25 minutes) to watch this video. The length is worth it! It is a wonderful story of how she sold him as a youngster and then had a gut feeling that she needed to buy him back because he was “supposed to come home “.
Trained by Michael Matz, also from my area, Union Rags has had a spectacular career so far. In February, I watched him run (on TV) at Gulf Stream and he took my breath away. He is 17 hands, beautifully put together and sports the look of one amazingly fit athlete. With all that though, the Wyeth’s describe him as the sweetest horse. We all know (and love) the type. The special talented yet calm horse that will let you climb all over him while he is lying down! Lets hope Saturday is indeed his day and his fans can raise a glass to him.
(Ladies, do you have your hats ready? Remember fashion and style are a Derby tradition!)
Tune in to NBC on Saturday afternoon to watch what is referred to as the most exciting 2 minutes in sports.
